The Rally of Staden was only the third race of the season for Andy Lefevere and, as in the ORC and the TBR, Andy Lefevere was again the fastest. “But I didn’t really expect it. It was a hectic week in the garage and the competition was no slouch…”
Three best times and nearly a 10-second lead after the first round proved that Andy was right up and running right away. “That wasn’t hard, I had hardly slept then you wake up quickly.” laughed Andy.
“The car marched perfectly and I myself only made 1 small mistake, less than a hundred meters from my house I was a little too far. Fortunately I only lost 4 seconds… For the rest we had to drive very fast, but as the day progressed and there was more gravel on the track it became more and more difficult. On the Staden test I recorded a top speed of just under 223 km/h while the R5 of Verschueren topped out at 198, but in the fans that followed I had to get off the gas 3 times while an R5 should never let go there… The weight of our R4 plays into our disadvantage there.”
After the race, many supporters wondered what it would give if Andy Lefevere started in an R5 car. “Of course that would be cool, but we proved once again that our R4 is still competitive too. An R5 still seems too expensive at the moment, but never say never hey…”
The next race scheduled is the ConXion Omloop van Vlaanderen on Sept. 2 and 3 in Roeselare.
